How long have you been in business?
I started Inspections by Bob as an ASHI Associate in 2003, and achieved the level of ASHI Certified Inspector. My wife, Welmoed, advanced from Associate Member of ASHI to ASHI Inspector in 2013 after getting her license in 2011, and is currently working on becoming an ASHI Certified Inspector.
What is your primary product or service?
Picky, thorough, paranoid Home inspections by a home owner who has paid to replace too many things that were installed incorrectly, damaged, or not maintained because I wasn't told how to maintain them.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I have always been curious about how homes work, and when I had a chance to change careers, some friends told me I should become a Home Inspector. I couldn’t believe I could get paid for what I was doing for fun already!
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Probably the big difference is that I have never been a builder or electrician, so the only way I know how to do things is the way the factory or manufacture has trained me... "We've been doing it that way for years..." is not good enough for me. I take more time than most other inspectors and I explain more, I don't just hand over a report; I go over the report with my client until they are satisfied they understand everything. Clients will call me weeks or even months afterwards to ask for my input on new plans for their homes, and I’m always happy to provide any help that I can.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are a “mom and pop” business, with my wife, Welmoed (or ‘Mrs. Bob’, as she is known) as the only other inspector, and we don't have plans to expand the business. With two inspectors, we are able to inspect up to four properties a day (although that's a very long day), and during the height of Real Estate season in the summer, that gives our schedule enough time to accommodate nearly all of our clients' needs.
Provide detailed directions to your location
I don't do any work from home, only at your site. The inspector will always meet you at the home to be inspected, or your authorized representative. If you can't be on site during the inspection, the inspector will arrange to meet you at a nearby coffee shop to discuss your report, or arrange a conference call to go over your report by phone.
What type of payments do you accept?
MC/Visa/Amex, Cash, and checks.
Which areas do you service?
Montgomery, Frederick, Carrol and Howard counties are in our service area.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Bob and Welmoed are equal partners in Inspections by Bob, as well as being the two Home Inspectors.
What are your hours of operation?
Sun-up to sun-down and then some. So long as I can get the exterior done before sundown I can do the inspection. Condos and Apartments don't need daylight, so those can be done whenever is convenient. Our office typically answers the phone from 8am to 8pm on any given day, including holidays and weekends.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"You were so picky/paranoid!" You are paying us to ensure that the home you're purchasing is comfortable and - most importantly - safe!
